owned by the man who bought the land from Cato’s

former owner and who owned

the walnut trees Cato’s hands had sown

to feed his children in a future

they never saw. You marvelled at that soil’s

fertility, how from dry sticks

which had seemed to be dead, large buds unfolded,

tropical leaves greened and turned

deep red, the rough cellar under human wreckage

now filled with the smooth sumac.

FUGITIVES

I hear … about trampling this law under foot.

Why, one need not go out of his way to do that.

This law rises not to the level of the head …

its natural habitat is in the dirt.
